CVE-2025-0282
Ivanti Connect Secure vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2025-0282 is a critical stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability affecting multiple Ivanti network appliances. The vulnerability was discovered in January 2025 and affects Ivanti Connect Secure (versions before 22.7R2.5), Ivanti Policy Secure (versions before 22.7R1.2), and Ivanti Neurons for ZTA gateways (versions before 22.7R2.3). This vulnerability allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to achieve remote code execution (Ivanti Advisory, NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in code designed to handle IF-T connections. The flaw exists because developers used strncpy with an incorrect size parameter, passing the size of the input string instead of the destination buffer's size. The vulnerability specifically affects the /home/bin/web binary, which handles incoming HTTP requests and VPN protocols. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 score of 9.0 (Critical) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H (Watchtowr Labs, Google Cloud Blog).

Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to achieve unauthenticated remote code execution with root privileges on affected systems. Successful exploitation can lead to complete system compromise, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary commands, deploy malware, and potentially gain access to internal networks. The impact is particularly severe as it affects VPN appliances that are typically exposed to the internet and serve as critical access points to corporate networks (Google Cloud Blog, Censys).

Mitigation and workarounds

Ivanti has released patches for Connect Secure (version 22.7R2.5) and provided mitigation guidance. Organizations are advised to run the Ivanti Integrity Checker Tool (ICT) to identify potential compromises, perform threat hunting activities, and apply the available patches. CISA recommends organizations conduct hunt activities, take remediation actions if applicable, and apply updates before returning devices to service. For compromised systems, a factory reset is recommended before applying patches (CISA, Ivanti Advisory).
